Paul Antonio: 3000 Years of the Western Alphabet

→ Do you know where the letters you write come from? Those 26 little letters, x2, because your upper case and lowercase have different origins, have a long and complex beginning. It is all down to the need to record how much food we had to feed people and to record our thoughts on religious matters. This talk will start with how Ancient Egyptian and Cuneiform mixed together because of slavery, and how that blending allowed for the basis of the western letterforms to develop. We will walk through a demonstration of lettering history from the Romans Capitals scripts, to the Irish Uncials all the way through the variety of the Gothic Period then the evolution of Italic into Copperplate Script.
Fraktur-Workshop mit Sachin Shah

→ Fraktur is one of the most popular Gothic scripts based out of Central Europe between the 16th and 19th century. Fraktur is also one of the most free-style calligraphy scripts around. In this engaging workshop we will explore various strokes and patterns used in creating the Fraktur script. After learning the basic strokes and some warm-up exercises, we will learn majuscules and miniscules of the fraktur script.

Flourishing mit Paul Antonio

→ Flourishing is not magic, neither is it guesswork. Some believe we learn flourishes by repeating the shapes over and over but true learning comes from understand not learning by rote. Once the forms are understood you will never forget them and you and quite quickly build on them. I have worked out some truly basic underlying principles which demystifies where we put lines to make a pleasing flourish. Building on the same principle in the copperplate class of Angular Confinement, we will look at how and why we need to confine lines to make for pleasing flourishing. As it is a 4 hour class, student will be given homework which must be completed prior to the class. Copperplate Script mit Paul Antonio

→ This copperplate workshop will focus on my innovative and simplified approach to the writing of the script. The premise is based on fitting the curves of the letters into boxes to create an Angular confinement system which stops the letters from grows in scale and wildness.
Participants will start off with pencils, building an understanding of skeletal structure of the copperplate letters in the same way we study Roman Capitals. Once the shapes are understood we will move to nib and ink where participants will be more concerned with applying the nib to the already entrenched pencil shapes. → Friedrich hat zusammen mit einem Orgelbauer ein ziemlich geniales Schreibwerkzeug gebaut. Damit lässt sich stehend im Schwellzug schreiben. Übrigens mit Wasser.
