→ In his talk, Mark Addison Smith will show examples from his studio practice and tell stories of how he has employed hand-lettering and found-language to engage and empower marginalized communities for political or social change. His talk will include visual samples from his You Look Like The Right Type overheard-dialogue series, connecting strangers though hand-rendered speech and storytelling; his Queer Writing on the Bathroom Wall hate-speech bathroom graffiti series, combating against LGBTQ discrimination; and his Years Yet Yesterday AIDS-activism series, questioning a decade of the ongoing AIDS pandemic.

Toshi Omagari: Exploring the finite frontier

→ Toshi started collecting monospaced pixel fonts from arcade games, which was turned into a book called “Arcade Game Typography”. Inspired by the infinite imagination of the old fonts, he started his own type foundry that only sells monospaced fonts. In this talk, Toshi will share his passion and insights into making fonts for fixed metrics.

→ The wheel is the second episode of the pen-triptych: three talks by Underware in which they are investing into the phenomena of ‘writing instruments’. Within the talks they are asking themselves the following questions: What is a pen? What to do with it? What else can we imagine? Why do we write?

The other two parts of the pen-triptych (“The Pen” and “Homo Scriptus Ludens”) will be held in Paris & Moscow.

And while it’s not easy to make a lot of money with specialized how-to books, there are other good reasons for writing books anyway. On the example of the five non-fiction books Chris has published, she details her process: how to develop an idea, write a book proposal, find a publisher, outline and plan a book and then write it while designing it in parallel.

With over 10 years of experience creating custom lettered logotypes for brands across the world, Claire will talk through her work and design process, using case studies of both new logos and re-designs to demonstrate how even the smallest of typographic characteristics contribute towards forming a unique logotype.
