Luc(as) de Groot
Der in Berlin lebende niederländische Schriftgestalter Luc(as) de Groot ist besonders bekannt für seine Superfamilie Thesis: TheSans, TheSerif, TheMix, TheAntiqua, mit monospaced und sogar arabischen Varianten. Aber sein Schaffen ist viel breiter und seine Schriften zu einem subtilen Teil des Alltags geworden. Luc(as) hat Schriften für Zeitungen wie Folha de S.Paulo, Le Monde, Metro, Der Spiegel, taz.die tageszeitung, Freitag, Jungle World entworfen – und Corporate Fonts für internationale Unternehmen wie Sun Microsystems, Bell South, Heineken, Volkswagen und Miele. Für Microsoft entwickelte er zwei Schriftfamilien: die monospaced Consolas, Nachfolgerin der Courier, und Calibri, die neue Standardschrift in MS Word.
Luc(as) de Groot ist auch Vater, Ehemann, Illustrator und Meister auf vielen Gebieten. Als passionierter Schrifttechniker und Hinting-Liebhaber hat er die Anisotrope Topologie-abhängige Interpolationstheorie entwickelt und lehrt Schriftdesign an der Fachhochschule Potsdam. In Berlin betreibt er seine Foundry LucasFonts und das Designstudio FontFabrik und hält in der ganzen Welt Vorträge. Sein Ziel: die Welt zu verbessern, indem er Schriften entwirft, die unter allen Umständen und in so vielen Sprachen wie möglich gut funktionieren und angenehm aussehen.
Weltweit haben Grafikdesigner die besondere Qualität der Luc(as)-Schriften entdeckt. Sie schätzen Funktionalität, freundliche Erscheinung und die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der Schriften. Viele schätzen auch die Eigenheiten – ein Streben nach Extremen, das Luc(as) zu einigen der schmalsten, dünnsten, witzigsten und fettesten Schriften überhaupt geführt hat.

But his repertoire is much wider and his type became a subtle part of everyday life. Luc(as) has designed custom fonts for newspapers such as Folha de S.Paulo, Le Monde, Metro, Der Spiegel, taz.die tageszeitung, Freitag, Jungle World – in addition to creating corporate type for international companies including Sun Microsystems, Bell South, Heineken, Volkswagen and Miele. He developed two font families for Microsoft: the monospaced font family Consolas, as a successor for Courier, and Calibri, the new default typeface in MS Word.
Luc(as) de Groot is also a father, husband, illustrator and master of many crafts. As a devoted type technician and hinting lover, he invented the Anisotropic Topology-Dependent Theory of Interpolation, and teaches type design at the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, Germany. He runs his type foundry LucasFonts and design studio FontFabrik in Berlin and gives lectures around the world. His overall aim: to make the world a better place by designing typefaces that look pleasant and work well under any circumstances and in as many languages as possible.
