Kimya Gandhi: Looking at the Past, Present and Future of Type in India
→ In India, we live simultaneously in a number of centuries together. There is continuity of thought, philosophy and the way of life. But the decisive factor in the perpetuation of the cultural dichotomy between tradition and modernity is the exclusion of traditional culture from formal design education. From being revered as symbols of worship to the emergence of swanky type design studios, letterforms have come a long way. This talk aims at giving an overview of the visual landscape of India, evaluating the role of designers in the current environment and speculates the future of the Indian type industry.
